Some technical details about the photos from Douglas Mesney . . . .

"All these long-lens flare shots were done with a Russian-made 500-mm MTO which was a mirror-lens whose folded optics were the best in the bsuiness in terms of sharpness... there was also significant "hot-spotting" which I came to like. Unfortunately, it was stolen from me in 1972, when a thief broke into my 23rd Street studio, which was "right around the corner" from Car & Driver's offices, and the Red Ball Garage. The flare was the result of a silk stocking stretched in front of the lens (not a glass filter... hence no loss of sharpness, even though a long lens."
